This CORE Coffee Chat will feature a conversation with Dr. Bullock, Director of the Blum Center on Poverty, Social Enterprise, & Participatory Governance, about her research and insights from a 2021 book she co-authored with Mark Robert Rank and Lawrence M. Eppard, Poorly Understood: What America Gets Wrong About Poverty. Even though the experience of poverty is common in American life, myths and misinformation about economic disparities and opportunities are incredibly stubborn. Decades and now centuries of framing poverty as an individual problem—one that individuals need to conquer by focusing on education and hard work—also obscures potential system-level policy solutions.
Poorly Understood explores these themes and more. There’s no need to read the book in advance, but if you’d like to add it to your reading list, it’s widely available from your favorite independent bookstore. During the CORE Coffee Chat, we’ll hear from Dr. Bullock and also will have a chance to discuss your questions and reactions, especially in terms of implications for Santa Cruz County.
