Have you ever come across a compelling visual that tells a story in such a strong, memorable way that it sticks with you, or makes you see something differently? We love those moments and are always on the lookout for ways to incorporate better storytelling into our work. We know many of you feel the same way!

A few months ago, we experimented with a new CORE Institute format and formed a “Learn, Do, Share” community of practice focused on visual storytelling with data. We attended a webinar series sponsored by the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR) and offered by Carissa Carter, a director of Stanford’s design (or “d”) school and author of The Secret Language of Maps. Our goal was to Learn new ideas about how to tell stories with data, then practice using new tools and techniques (Do) and Share our progress and challenges with each other – and now with you!

Join us for this CORE Coffee Chat on Tips for Visual Storytelling with Data where we’ll be joined by four of the participants in the Learn, Do, Share community of practice: Claudia Abasto (Senior Citizens Legal Services), Andrew Cunningham (Big Brothers, Big Sisters), Mariah Roberts (County Park Friends), and Yvette Brooks (Your Future Is Our Business).

During the Chat, we’ll share some highlights from the training, but most of the session will be devoted to showing you how we used what we learned. We will share examples of ways the webinar training shifted the ways we think about data visualization and storytelling, as well as specific tips, tools, and resources we found helpful along the way. Of course, we each encountered obstacles and challenges, and we’ll share those too. We hope you’ll gain a mix of inspiration and practical resources to apply to the stories you want to tell.

This CORE Coffee Chat is not about sharing perfect, finished products that will dazzle you. Instead, it’s about sharing our journey to tell better stories, even ones that are still unfolding.
